As with the question of whether to form a U.S. company, this can be answered easily: Attend a trade show! All the experts agree (so do we), and the relevant statistics send a clear message. Market studies are expensive and are often written by young people, who—while able to put together wonderfully colorful statistics—have no sense of your products, the U.S. market, and sales in general. Most studies are not worth the cost and offer little new knowledge. Instead just go “live” and test the reaction to your products in the United States directly at the customer base. Trade shows lead to interesting contacts: representatives, agents, or distributors usually express interest. Most trade shows require six to eight months’ lead.
